Harris House is a charitable, not for profit corporation whose primary purpose is to help alcoholic and chemically dependent persons achieve sobriety and become useful, healthy and productive individuals. Implicit in our mission is giving people the opportunity to experience the miracle of their own recovery, regardless of race, cree or economic status.

History

Harris House has been helping men and women experience the miracle of their own recoveries for more than 45 years. It began in 1960 when a St. Louis couple, Dallas and Illene Mosely, provided living space and care for alcoholics in their home. Initially on MacPherson Street in the Central West End, Harris House moved to its current South Broadway location in 1981, after a fire destroyed its original building.

From the beginning, Harris House has provided two constants:

Over the years, Harris House has evolved from merely offering shelter, to providing professional, comprehensive services along a continuum of care that extends from intensive inpatient treatment to transitional housing. Harris House offers recovering people much-needed structure that enables them to learn responsible patterns of living.

Our Treatment Philosophy

Each year the disease of chemical dependency affects more than twenty million Americans, their families, friends and employers. According to the National Counsel on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, over 14 million (one in every 13 adults) abuse alcohol. After smoking it is the most common preventable cause of death in the United States. Without proper treatment, the prognosis is poor for those suffering from alcoholism and drug addiction. The body deteriorates, the mind is damaged and the spirit is crushed. Identification and treatment of the disease are critical to the process of arresting and beginning to mend the damage wrought by addiction.

Alcoholism and chemical dependency are related to other social problems including homelessness, community disintegration, unemployment and violence. This does not include lost workplace productivity, medical costs, alcohol-related traffic deaths and criminal activity. Harris House treatment programs offer hope to men and women and their families suffering from the devastating consequences of chemical dependency. We emphasize treatment of the physical, emotional, spiritual and family aspects of addiction and alcoholism. Our comprehensive programs include education, professional counseling and a structured living environment.

The underlying principle to all of our treatment programs is “Recovery with Responsibility”. Our treatment program goals include:

Harris House opened its doors almost 50 years ago. At that time, located in the home of our founders, Harris House offered housing to people in early recovery. No one could have imagined the growth we have experienced since those early years. Harris House has evolved to a highly structured treatment milieu offering three levels of quality care. This is all made possible by a dedicated Harris House Board of Directors, who provides our committed professional staff with the resources necessary to deliver superior treatment services.

Our philosophy is simple: We provide a safe and healthy environment conducive to a successful recovery. We offer each client counseling, case management and vital exposure to the 12 step recovery community. The core value at Harris House is Recovery with Responsibility. This is the basis for a reeducation that leads to a sober, healthy and productive new life style.
